The FTC put the brakes on DR Phone Pre-Paid Calling Cards amid allegations that DR Phone is using false advertising to lure in immigrant consumers.
According to the FTC Webpage, “DR Phone Communications targeted immigrant communities” by “using brand names such as ‘Beautiful Asia,’ ‘Vietnam Best,’ and ‘Pearls of Africa.’ The cards were sold in convenience stores, groceries and kiosks across the country and on DR Phone’s website.” And upon testing, the cards did not hold up well; out of 169 cards, the FTC found that 100% came up short of their promised minutes.
In addition to the possibility of false advertising, DR Phone Communications may have knowingly published misinformation; the cards allegedly hid various fees from their customers, even as they promised there weren’t any—a clear violation of Federal Law. This recent crack-down on DR Phone is just part of a federal initiative to cut back on the number of pre-paid phone scams circulating throughout the nation.
